When we talk about the Top Selling Films of All Time this refers to ticket sales at the Box-Office whilst it was being screened. It does not take into account any other sort of revenue the film might have made in other sales, such as DVD or television networks. It also does not qualify the film as being particularly good, but as you can see from the list this is mostly true. And finally, it does not take into account any awards the film many have won, for our purpose it is purely the Bucks we are counting.
These films rankings are obviously made by the popularity of their audiences, the takings at the Box-Office are purely cinema goers passing through the turnstiles and paying their hard-earned cash over. They are no way dictated by critic’s choices or any other parameter. It also must be noted that our rankings are at the 1st June 2016, and do not take any account of recent films this year.
No. 1 Avatar
Top of the list is the sci-fi blockbuster Avatar, starring Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Michelle Rodriguez. Avatar grossed a staggering $2,787,965,087 which qualifies this epic production as the number one film by a long stretch. The futuristic plot features a paraplegic marine who is sent on a mission to Pandora. But as the plot unravels he becomes at home with this alien world and its peoples, and is torn between his orders and what his heart is telling him.
No. 2 Titanic
This James Cameron epic production of the tale of the doomed cruise liner is lavish to the fullest extent. There has actually been over seventeen films based on the famous story, and without doubt this 1997 version is one of the very best. The story is famous, but Cameron’s twist is the epic doomed love affair between Rosie and Jack played by Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Narrated by Rosie in her twilight years. Titanic took $2,186,772,302 at the Box Office.
No. 3 Star Wars
It is fitting that a Star Wars movie makes the top three, as this Sci-Fi extravaganza has been thrilling movie goers for decades. And it is one of the latest productions of Star Wars that tops the list. Star Wars – The Force Awakens is set thirty years after the Empire’s defeat, but there is a new threat that has risen in the form of The First Order. The Resistance meanwhile is still hunting for the missing Luke Skywalker. In typical Stars Fashion some of the leading actors are not household names which has always given great credibility to the casting director of this monumental series of films. The figure at the Box-Office for this Star Wars was $2,066,960,090.
No. 4 Jurassic World
Jurassic World is the latest edition in the Jurassic Park series of films. It seems a long time ago that the American science-fiction film first graced the cinema screens back in 1993. The fantastic directing by Steven Spielberg, and the animated effects bought the age-old creatures to life on the big screen. Jurassic World takes place in a brand-new park on its own secluded island, the story-line is the same as ever with escaped monsters chasing around after fleeing humans. But because of the great cinematography this energetic romp is entertaining as any other Jurassic film. Released in 2015 and directed by Colin Trevorrow it grossed $1,670,400,637.
No. 5 The Avengers
The first Marvel film to make the list, this 2012 release is crammed full of stars including, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson. The plot is based around S.H.I.E.L.D, which is a fictitious global peace-keeping force. Attending this worldwide organization are The Avengers who are a collection of Marvel Super Heroes that include, Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow and The Incredible Hulk. The world is threatened by the Super Baddie, Loki and his minions, The Avengers need all their collective Powers to defeat this ultimate disaster. The Avengers grossed $1,519,557,910 when it was released in 2012 at the Box Office. It is also interesting that the 2015 Avengers film, The Age of Ultron actually came number seven in the rankings. Only the James Wan Film Fast & Furious 7 separated them.
So that concludes the list of our five most watched movies ever, there are definitely one or two surprises both included but more so omitted. Where were the Harry Potter movies? And the epic Lord of the Rings blockbusters? All we can say for now is that they are not in the top five, and definitely will not ever get in it either. Only a new movie release can do that now and it will be really interesting to see what comes in the future to dislodge our current top five.
