Hollywood has a habit of throwing large amount of cash at movies, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not, there has been a fair share of flops that Hollywood is responsible for also. Here we look at the most expensive films ever made by Hollywood to date, some of them might surprise you that they have made it onto our list and others you would expect.
1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – $403 million
The first of our two Walt Disney Pirates films, this 2011 version On Stranger Tides once again has Johnny Depp playing the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow. This time he crosses cutlasses with Angelica played by Penelope Cruz, the foppish captain cannot make up his mind if she loves him or drawing him into a fiendish plot. Jack Sparrow is tricked and forced upon the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Sparrow meets up with Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and is taken along on a wild adventure that he has no choice but to follow.
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End – $347 million
This earlier Pirates film was released in 2007, all the old characters appear including Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly), and of course Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). The alliance of Barbossa, Turner and Swann have to band together and sail off the edge of the world in an attempt to find the missing Captain Sparrow. As with all the wonderful Pirates of the Caribbean films, there is treachery and betrayal around every corner, that eventually leads to one last decisive battle.
3. Titanic 1997 – $298
This mega production by James Cameron won 11 Oscars and was nominated for a further 75. The all star cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates and Bernard Hill play out the parts on board the doomed vessel. The famous story of the luxury passenger liner heading its unwitting way to Armageddon and the fated meeting with an iceberg, is changed more into a simple love story between a seventeen-year-old aristocrat (Rose) and her first love (Jack). Another clever ploy by Cameron is that the whole tale plays out as a narration by Rose in her later years, who recants her dramatic story.
4. Spider Man 3 – $298 million
Released by Marvel in 2007, Spider Man 3 is the fourth most expensive film ever to have been made. Peter Parker seems to have settled down and is actually attending to his studies and has a girlfriend in the guise of Mary Jane Watson. The problem is that Harry Osborn still despises Parker for his father’s death, and is determined to wreak revenge as the frightening Sandman. It all becomes a little sinister when Spider-Man changes his Lycra to a mysterious black costume, and a darker Super Hero emerges.
5. Avengers: Age of Ultron – $283 million
Our second Marvel film rounds up our top five of the most expensive films ever made, and this star-studded epic is lavish in every way. A secret weapon meant to be for the protection of mankind goes terribly wrong and the world faces annihilation. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner are forced into a desperate battle to nullify Ultron and save the world.
These five films are without doubt spectacular productions. It is easy to see where the vast pots of money were spent, as the technical and action parts of the movies are lifelike, breathtaking and involve the viewer as if they were actually there.
